Our Funding

How Our Housing is Funded

Across Ireland, social housing is provided by Local Authorities and Approved Housing Bodies (AHB) like SJOG Housing Association. We are a regulated, not-for-profit organisation. This means everything we do is guided by strong governance and oversight, and any income we receive is reinvested to provide and improve homes for the people we support.

Our income comes primarily from rent paid by tenants and Local Authority funding arrangements for social housing provision. As a not-for-profit organisation, we reinvest this income directly back into housing — maintaining existing homes and developing new ones.

We plan and deliver housing through a structured development programme, working closely with government and local partners. Funding for new homes is provided by the Department of Housing and administered through Local Authorities. This allows us to develop long-term, community-based housing for people with specific needs. We do not fundraise from the general public. Instead, we focus on partnerships and public funding to deliver sustainable housing solutions. As an AHB, we can access financing through the Housing Finance Agency and other responsible lenders. This allows us to invest in new developments and continue growing our housing provision in a sustainable way.

A Mix of Funding Models

The different types of funding support include
  1. Capital funding (CAS) which supports the development of homes for people with specific needs.
  2. Leasing and private finance, which help expand housing options and support new developments.
  3. Long-term agreements with the State, which provide stability and enable us to plan for the future.
Working flexibly to meet housing need

Alongside building and developing homes, we also lease properties from the private sector where appropriate. This approach expands the range of housing options available and helps us respond more quickly to local housing need, particularly for those on Local Authority waiting lists.

Together, these approaches allow us to deliver secure, high-quality homes and continue to grow our housing provision over time.
