Volunteering

Volunteers are people from all walks of life, all ages and stages. What they have in common is the desire to make a difference in their community – and in their own life – by giving of their time. Volunteers are involved in virtually every aspect of society including health, education, social services, youth, sports and recreation, culture, the arts and the environment.

People choose to volunteer for a variety of reasons; for some, it offers the chance to give something back to the community or to make a difference to the people around them; for others, it provides an opportunity to develop new skills or build on existing experiences and knowledge. Regardless of the motivation, what unites them all is that they find it both challenging and rewarding.

“My name is John Galloway and after I decided on early retirement, I quickly realised that I had plenty more to do. With a desire to help others, I figured that I could give my time and energy. I searched for volunteering opportunities and a friend, a Saint John of God Brother, put me in touch with the Saint John of God Housing Association.

I met with the housing team and we agreed that I would volunteer three days a week. I am based in Tessa House, Tallaght – an apartment block of twenty eight units for independent living. I organise the residents’ coffee morning / arts & crafts, and, when I can, I assist them with their day-to-day problems; giving them direction or helping them to find solutions.

My philosophy is that volunteering is at the very core of being human. No one has made it through life without someone else’s help. So I give a little bit!”

If you decide that you would like to get involved in volunteering but you are not sure exactly what you would like to do, then think about WHY you want to volunteer. This can be a useful way of helping you to focus on the sort of volunteering you want to undertake.
